About Bladex (BLX)
Banco Latinoamericano de Exportaciones (NYSE:BLX), or “Bladex,” is a specialized multinational bank established to finance the foreign trade of the countries in the Latin American and Caribbean regions. Bladex specializes in financing foreign trade for mainly commercial banks in some 25 countries. The borrowers then loan the funds to various businesses and government institutions involved in foreign trade.
Its main sources of funds are inter-bank deposits, investments, bond sales, and short-term borrowings from other international banks. The bank also offers trade financing to government entities and selected corporations and asset management to institutional investors. Bladex offers no retail services.
This is a supranational bank in the heart of Latin America — created by the initiative of the 23 central banks of Latin America and the Caribbean in 1975. Its primary shareholders include local, regional, and international banks, along with private investors.
Latin American exports in 2012 are forecasted to reach nearly a trillion dollars or 42% higher than the 2009 low. And with a faster-than-world-average growth rate, Latin American economies will capture a larger share of world trade flows.
